Does anyone know a good source for the expansion valve for the A/C system?
Do the spiders use an orifice tube like some cars. If so, is there a source for that?
Anything else critical to replace besides compressor and O-rings?

Get a parallel-flow condenser, it's a real upgrade.

If I'm not mistaken, R12 hose fittings won't work for R134A, so new hoses, too.

What do you mean by parallel flow condenser and what difference does it make?

I'm not an AC tech, but the original factory condensers 'back in the day' (when our cars were built) used a single long folded tube zigzagging across the face of the condenser. Modern condensers use multiple tubes. More efficient and increased temperature drop.
