HAte to show my ignorance but can someone give a simple explanation of what constitutes an S1 S2 etc Spider? I see constant references to this in the forum but have never seen a definition. My '71 Spider ( besides being the love of my life-- Lord help me if my wife sees this!) would be a?

Well, it is series 1, 2, 3, 4. But I don't know how the years break down. As far as I can tell, the higher the number, the more plastic involved. Mine for example, a series 4 from 1993, has plastic bumpers and skirts. :D

I'd guess you are a series 2.

What are the corresponding years?

Happy motoring!

S1 is the "boat tail" or Osso di Sepia (cuttle fish bone) 1966 to 69 (Carbs)
S2 is the Kamm Tail or Coda tronca (truncated tail) 1971 to 81 (Spica)
S3 is the Bosch L-jetronic 1982 to 89
1990 transition, same body as S3, but Bosch Motronic
S4 is the Bosch Motronic and last series 1991 to 1994

See page 40 of current IAP catalog for further info and nuances.

Best regards, Elio

Your 71 spider is probably a S2 (has kamm tail, does not have the previous round-tail)

It gets kinda confusing since the production years typically preceeded the model year, and the US models sometimes were off a year or even skipped a year...for example S4 was in Europe as a 1990 model year, but a 1991 US model year. I "think" this is the correct breakdown for the US -
S1 = Series 1: Duetto round tail = 1966-69 (no 1968,1970 model in US)
S2 = Series 2: kamm tail = 1971-82 (no 1972 US model in US)
S3 = Series 2: rear spoiler = 1983-90
S4 = Series 4: plastic bumpers = 1991 - 1994
*note - years are US model years not production years

IMO ther are no S5's. They are FIATs.;)
Technically wouldn't that fall all the way back to 86-87 MY, making them S3c/F's? Or are you talking strictly from a design and engineering standpoint as opposed to the parent company angle? :D

my 86 was an alfa
My 87 is and Alfa-Lancia. Uhm - maybe we should have s3a, s3b. S4 stil have the same pedigree, so they would be S4- (minus), wait, what was the original question again?

Think your off a couple of years... S2 is 1971 - 1974, S2A is 1975-1981

All I know is that my '82 is a red headed bastard stepchild. The body is S2 while the running gear is S3. The bad part is that I have to get manuals for both the S2 & S3 since the S2 manuals cover up to '81 and the S3 manuals cover '83 & later.
