What is the trick to get the switch out of the body cavity? It just appears to be to big to come out of its hole.

You mean on the B pillar? Remove the screws and the finishing plate. Disconnect the battery, mark and remove the wire(s), then wiggle it out. The contact "wings" are hinged, are pressed by little plastic plungers from the doors' closing. They fold. The plastic can become brittle, so go slowly.

I did that, but those two wings appear to be too big to come back out the hole .... I know, they went in and metal doesn't grow ....or maybe it does

You turn it about 90 degrees as the hole is taller and lets the "wings" (switch paddles) pass. Wiggle it up, pull the bottom wing out, then pull it down. Do disconnect the battery.
