Ed Mangino took these photos of my 72' spider were taken at the 50th anniversary of the Waterford Hills track a few seasons ago. It was a great event at a fantastic little track with plenty of Alfas present. I was able to out brake the Cobra in the first corner. Cheers, Doug

70's shots

Not the best racing shots, but for me some great racing memory photos.

Likely 1973 Midwest region event, Topeka, KS? Alfas are GTA clones run by Dr. Paul Tenney. Dick Davenport won a C sedan championship in one of them. I believe that Dr. Martinez now owns the Davenport car. I was fortunate to spend much time in the Tenney garage back in the day.

Same event, Group 44 paddock in their early days of success. Got to meet John McComb and a few other team guys.

As I'm sure it was for many of us, early exposure to Alfas both on the street and track made a long lasting impression...

Best regards,

Gmack

That must be Patrick Racing's Roberto Guerrero in the 1990 Indianapolis 500, driving the March-Alfa Romeo 90CA. There's a picture on the net somewhere, showing Guerrero and Johnny Mauro. The latter was of course the previous guy to run an Alfa Romeo in the Indy 500 - in 1948!

The year 1991 they used the Lola L91 chassis, which was faster than the March. When they got Danny Sullivan as driver some good results were expected. Best race was 4th place in the Gold coast race in Queensland Australia. At the 3. race, Phoenix Az. the Alfa had a good showing, actually leading a couple of laps. Alfa/Danny Sullivan totaled 11th place that year. Sadly the 3 year Alfa Indycar project ended without the great results. Alfa was developing 5 valve heads for the engine but it only ran for the last races without significant improvements in power. Interest in Alfa racing in America was declining, so was sales, so at the end of 91 the project was ended according to original plan.

TW.: have looked at your link, which is about the 2 previous years, and the problems with the March chassis. Both Guerrero and the March chassis were dropped in favour of Lola L91 and Danny Sullivan as driver for the 91 season. The 2 first years were considred as developing years while the 91 season was supposed be the year of results. Unfortunately even with one of the best drivers and the same chassis as the others used, the Alfa engine did not bring the best results. Possibly one more year could have helped improving the car, however plans from the start were to stop racing at the end of 91.

Interesting that they were on their way to have a 40-valve V8. I wonder how much Ferrari and Alfa inspired each other with regard to engines. The 40-valve F355 V8 must have been fresh off the drawing board in 1992 (?).

Too bad they stopped both the V8, V10 and the rumoured V12 project in favour of DTM racing. But as the article says; they probably got too streched and distracted by the Group C project. Talk about producing cars directly for the museum ...
