Ok this is still in the imagineering phase so please bear with me if this is a dumb question. Is it possible to adapt a 3.0L Alfa Engine into the the Maserati Merak? I hear terrible things about the OE Maser/Citroen engine and how its just a dog. Parts for this engine are few and far between hence the thought process of putting the much nicer engine there in its place. Thoughts? All opinions including that I should be locked away are welcomed.:D

I've seen enough engine swaps at this point to know you can put anything into anything. The only limit is money.

That being said, Meraks are getting a bit thin on the ground and I think if you bought a runner you'd be best served by trying to keep it original. Either start with one with a blown engine or (better idea) put the money you'd spend in doing the conversion into buying a car that has both a body AND an engine that you like.

Hell, get a 308. Same period car, drop dead looks, and can't go wrong with the engine that's already there. Plus you can grow a mustache, wear short shorts, and call yourself Magnum :D

id have to see the engine bay to get an idea of how much trouble it would be..but a conversion is NOT all about money..its about time talent and tools...in taht comes size of engine vs size of hole you want to stick it

Set up right there is nothing wrong with the Merak engine-it`s a Maserati so keep it Maserati. Parts are available in USA otherwise Bill McGrath in UK. There is also a Citroen SM specialist in LA as I`ve seen on Jay Leno`s car website (Citroen SM`s have same V6 as Citroen owned Maserati at time) Christ we can even get parts in way off New Zealand miles from anywhere and at 10 times the price you guys get to pay.
If you can`t afford a Maser don`t buy it..

Hey Tito, My doctor has both a Merak and a 308. He likes them both and would not hesitate to jump in either one and drive cross country.

I wouldn't be so harsh on the conversion, but I do agree a good example should not be chosen.

I don't have an Alfa V6 but understand them to be very reliable and if you could make a Merak a daily driver like a GTV6, that would be awesome. I love the Merak. I love the Biturbo too, and have dreamed of an Alfa V6 in one of those to remove the finicky-ness of the Maserati.

Actually, a 308 engine in a Merak would be the ultimate. On the Ferrari Chat website, some guys put 308s in the V6 Dino body, so the Merak could work too.

I'd keep the Merak's V6 close at hand in case the reverse needs to be done someday and I'd try to modify the Merak as little as possible in case that reversal had to happen.
