Ok, I'm rebuilding the original 1600 on my 67 GTV and pulled out the oil filter to compare to the new one I just ordered from Classic Alfa and the new one is about 1/2" taller! It doesn't fit. Yet the parts guy assured me its the correct one. What am I missing here?

Do you have one of the little rubber doughnut-shaped spacers sitting in the bottom of the canister? They lift the filter element about 1/2".

Thanks guys! I think it's the rubber seal on the bottom, preventing the larger filter from fitting. My mechanic didn't want to remove it for fear it wouldn't seal properly, but it looks like the only way to go.

If I may make a modest suggestion ....

How about one of these? Cheaper than risking ruined bearings, looks stock, makes oil changes easy, much wider choice of filters. Plenty of other BB'ers would agree. More details here.
