DON'T FORGET TO REMOVE OIL PUMP SHAFT NUT before trying to yank rear head off on 164 12v and 24v V6 engines.

Paul just wanted to remind you all of this Note I have posted a few times.

Also do not mix up gear with one from another head unless you are sure it matches gear on another aux shaft as not all V6 engines use same part number gear sets with same teeth.

It's deceptive because with the head nuts removed, the rear head seems to be loose. It's not.

I remember posting about this very same question when trying to pull a rear head off of a wrecking yard car. It would lift a little then I could hear a clunk. I knew it had to be something. Came back home, posted on the BB, and 30 mins later thanks to alfisto steve I had the answer. I would have never have guessed that that little bit would be causing my headaches! Thanks again for the post,

Jon

How were the other gears made? They weren't reverse gearing were they?
See this factory bulletin: 01.92.02
Aux Drive Gear Sets - distributor/ oil pump drive gears must be replaced in sets.

Different number of teeth for early and late engines.
