 please help. My 79 spider has developed a rather strange noise from the gearbox. in 2nd and 4th gears a noise similar to pouring water appears and dissapears when the clutch is applied. Reverse also sounds awful and smells like burning. These noises seem less as the car warms up. I have checked the gear oil and topped it up but the noise is still there. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Sure its not the clutch? Change the transmission lube and check the color. Otherwise, I'd think its the clutch slipping\smelling and getting tired.

Also check the two rubber boots at the top of the transmission tower. If one of these is ripped or has come loose you would be subjected to noises and smells that are normal but don't belong in the ****pit.

Thanks bill and little italian. I will check out both of your ideas. however I dont relish taking out the centre console. As it is not my favorite job.
