Newbie with new toys!?

Hello, I'm new to this forum, Alfa's, and forums in general, so please correct me if I mess anything up! I live in Pa and saw two Alfa 164's for sale on Craigs List cheap, so I bought them! One is a 1991 164 silver on black w/106000 miles on it. Needs exhaust, struts, some cosmetics and who knows what else. The other is a 1993 164l green on some beautiful tan looking interior in awesome shape with 166000 miles and a badly blown head gasket and cracked windshield.
SOOOO!!! Any suggestions on what to do with em? Both have been sitting for a couple of years but do not appear to be parts cars. Wondering how much work it would be to do a motor swap since the 1993 is the nicer of the two. Would it be worth it with a 106000 mi. engine?? Should I sell them to guys on this forum who are more experienced with these babies and know the tricks?? I'm a VW guy myself and always stuck close to home!
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Jesse

"Between both you have what you need." Or at I think that's what the ad said. Saw these listed too, fix em up! I would pull what you need (that's good) from the green and get silver running. Focus on one car, get it safe, and get it so you don't hesitate taking it on a long trip... Then you can always get your hands dirty and get the green up to snuff later.
I just got the silver guy home about an hour ago. I bought these so quick after working all weekend that I just got to really check out the silver one. As the ad on Craigs list stated, this family (very nice and attached to their Alfa's) needed the cars moved this weekend. Turns out the silver one is actually nicer than the green one!! The interior is also awesome with black leather and only one small area of stitch loose on the passenger seat. The body is almost as nice as the green one as well with one ugly ding on the drivers door and one on the front fender. And this one I was told runs awesome. The gentleman chose not to fix the exhaust and struts for inspection in 2006 and parked it.
I think I'll post pics and try to get a ballpark on value of each because I'll probably fix one and sell one. Any suggestions on value in my area in the meantime???
Any Alfa guys around the Reading, PA area??
106K on a 3.0 Alfa motor is nothing, I'd swap the exhaust from the 93 if it's still good since a blown head gasket will cost $1100 and up if you take it to a qualified shop. If you have room for a parts car that's what I'd use the green one for. Pull the fender and door, sell the tan leather interior if it's claen and you'll have a nice daily driver. Where I live a clean L with 106K would be $2500 max but it really depends on how it looks. Many trade hands for $1200 to $1800.
Thanks for the input guys. I think that I will get the 91 running to make sure everythings OK. If it is, I'll steal the exhaust from the 93 because it appears to be almost new. I probably won't keep the 93 around for parts when I'm done (probably foolish, I know) so what could I get for as a parts car?? I don't really have the time to part one out. The interior is tan/mustard colored leather in nice shape, carpets and all. The body is straight with decent looking paint as well.
Parts cars here on the west coast are $200 to $400. Of course it's worth more parted out but that takes time and space.
It also destroys a car which in the hands of some others might be a very viable car.
I totally agree Del. I should rephrase the "parts car" part of my last post. This car is not for parts, its way too nice. I just meant I would sell it as a non running vehicle. The thought of parting it has crossed my mind, but I just got done giving them both a bath, and they're way to good for that. Still soaking all this in, by the way, so please keep suggestions coming.

By the way, after thinking on this for a week or so and checking them out more, I may keep one both or none of them, so if anyone is interested let me know about your interest. It may help me make up my mind. Also, what ever I do sell will be at a very good price because I bought them cheap. Especially to an Alfa guy who's gonna fix em up.

Welcome.
Fix the silver one. Don't part the green one until you know for sure that it is a parts car. If it takes several thousands of dollars to get it road worthy sell it to someone who can fix it themselves. Parting these out is hard and if you steal parts from one car to another your left with well a parts car and nothing more. We all hate to see another 164 die. My point of view, the less there are the less parts will be available which means in the long run that car you parted may affect you! If we keep the cars on the road there are more demand for parts which keeps them in circulation through alfa and after market vendors.
So my suggestion is the purchase new parts for the 164 and try to sell the green one to someone here that wants it for a fixer upper.
But maybe it is a parts car? It is a hard decision! I just bought a S last week that IMO would take 5-10K to get to good running condition, well of course it is being parted.
You may be able to get the HG's done for a good enough price to re-sell and make back the money you spent and maybe what you bought it for or keep it? At least it would be back on the road.

So good luck. have fun and welcome. You will love this car!

whatever you do, get at least one of them fixed....you'll be hooked and wonder: "how does one spell VW again??"
I'm with Jason or Del on this one. For sure there are people out there that would love to have your green one as a project in their garage. Hate to see another 164 that sounds pretty good other than the engine be relegated to parts car. Heck I still feel bad about my first 164 that I didn't keep and it was rear ended twice, went through a huge hail storm, developed a bad head gasket and of course some towing jokey used the rear trailing arm brace as a toe point. Would buy a new exhaust and struts for your silver one and then make sure that timing belt/tensioner has been done recently. Check radiator cooling fan operation as well. Tons of links on those subjects here.. hehe

good luck.. Let us know how it goes! I think you will like the car. :D

I kinda like a green 164. My dealer drives one as a gofer car sometimes, and he left it at my house when he came to pick up my car for some work. It was so dirty, I couldn't believe it. I always wanted to see up close what this green color looked like all shined up in the sun on a 164, so I detailed it out just for kicks. He didn't notice, it was dark when he returned, but the next day his wife wanted to know if he had detailed it out and why. I had to laugh when he asked me who I had do the detailing, and why the heck. Told him I just wanted to see what it should be looking like properly. He didn't seem to understand, LOL.
Most dealers don't know cars. They could be selling lawn mowers, doesn't matter to them.
There is something "classy" looking about the green 164. Anyone one know what that paint color is called on an Alpha?? What about the mustard colored leather interior? I'm gonna have to wait til the weekend to post pics when I have more time so you guys can take a look at what all my yappins' about!!
Oh, these guys know their cars. It's just that this guy is the business end of the outfit, and the brother is the mechanical side. While the business side guy knows every part which goes into an Alfa or Ferrari, he just isn't into the wax and polish scene. The other is not, as well, and is just interested in keeping everything he sees running properly and within spec. He once told me that if he didn't have to have money to pay for expenses in his life, he would fix Alfa's and Ferrari's for free and fun. It's his life.

Off the subject.

LOL, Alfarookie, it's Alfa, not Alpha. You'll learn.

cheers,
Nice with the ALPHA reference! I had just woken up and started another night shift when I wrote that. Maybe it was my subconscience stating the superiority of these cars over my beloved v-dubs????

Your dealer makes house calls?

finally some pics

I finally got some time to post a couple of pics of the 164's I puchased last month. I have decided to sell both cars because my schedule just isn't allowing me any time for play right now. I will take offers on the forum if anyones interested. I do have a member who had contacted me and has first dibs. I will list them for sale in the for sale section for a while before Ebaying. Not really sure what a fair price is but will sell them as cheap as possible to a no hassle buyer.

Holy smokes! 5 weeks later and I'm actually ready to put these in the for sale section. It took me this long to actually get the titles to them from the PO. I just transferred them into my name last Friday and I'm waiting for the titles in the mail. I'm posting them for sale but of course will not be able to do any transaction for a couple of weeks when the titles are back. I'm gonna ask for $1000 obo for both cars to a no hassle buyer. If I don't get it soon I'm going to get the silver one on the road and prove it out before I Ebay it. Thanks again for all the help on this forum. Jesse
Not sold yet!!! The silver one is now running. Engine runs smooth but smokes a little from sitting. Car has a lot of pep and shifts smoothly. The front struts are horrible and need to be replaced immediately. I will be Ebaying these cars next week if no offers here.
