No go seemingly. I have contacted Able Instruments and Ottos Instruments and both seem confident of repair. In my reading it is often the cable (replaced in my case) or the drive from the gearbox (also replaced) or in the speedo itself either the square shaped receiver of the cable or the worm drive in the speedo. Jaeger share many common parts with Smiths so that could be a bonus.
Speedo is working now. I pulled out the gauge and fitted a spare cable to it on the bench and, with the cordless drill on reverse, spun it up. It worked fine. I shaved a 1.5 mm off the spacer on the back of the gauge input for the cable and a little off the knurled nut on the cable itself. Re-fitted to the car and it is getting good traction now in the gauge.
