I lost all the instrument lights one night and the idiometer potentionmeter got really hot. I got a new dimmer but the system keeps blowing #14 fuse (7.5 amps). There are three wires to the dimmer. Yellow is power, but both black and white as well as black go directly to ground.

Before I shoot herion, does anyone know how the dimmer funstions or have any thoughts on troubleshooting. The wire diagram doesn't seem easy to trace.

The dimmer takes in voltage on yellow and outputs voltage on black/white. If you connect yellow to black/white the lights will work at full bright bypassing the dimmer.

In your case it sounds like black/white is shorted to ground. So the problem isn't in the dimmer, it's somewhere downstream of the dimmer on the lighting circuit.
