Are any of the ring gears stamped or otherwise marked as to how many teeth they have?

I just pulled a starter from my Berlina that was making nasty noises, and sure enough the end of the gear is chewed up.

I'm not sure why, but I'm trying to read up on the 130 vs 131 tooth issue and wonder if someone installed a 131 tooth ring gear in this 74 Berlina.

I'm happy to upgrade to a 1.1 HP starter if I really have a 131 tooth ring gear. But if I don't I'll just replace it with the stock 0.7 hp starter to be safe.

Thanks!

Ring gears

They didn`t install a 131 tooth gear on a 130 tooth flywheel, they don`t fit at all. I D of the various ring gears used on 2 liters are all different.
They probably installed a complete 131 tooth flywheel.

There is a thread on starters that match the specific ringgears on the BB.
As well, specifications and starter ID#s are easy to find in Spruell`s page:

I swapped starters between Berlinas and all is quiet again. One starter has chewed up teeth, but I'm not sure how it happened. Hopefully I won't have to figure out how to count the teeth. Both starters are 0.7 HP units. Time to call APE for a replacement.
