Maximum Towing Capacity for Alfetta GT Coupe (116)

Hi All,

A friend of mine has offered for me to buy his 2.0 Alfetta GT Coupe. (We just generically call 'em GTV's over here - creates a lot of confusion between models).
It has a beautiful fresh 4 cyl 2.0 engine and as a bonus it is already fitted with a towbar (tow hitch).
I know it's dependant on the construction of the hitch, but assuming that's good quality, how much can the rear half of the car handle? My friend didn't install it, and so has no idea what the towing capacity would be.

Did Alfa ever publish a maximum towing capacity for these cars?

Cheers,

Nice info!

Thanks very much for that.
My wife will be unhappy. She said I could buy it only if it was capable of towing a boat.
So now I have an excuse to buy another Alfa, and a boat :D

Cheers

A warning though. Gtv6 dont take kindly to tow bars!. If you tow regularly, the rear boot pan and chasiis seams will open up and tear, due to the stress from towing. These cars were not designed for towing at all, it was an after thought.

I'd fully agree. Never mind the chassis, the drive shaft and donuts would seem to be totally unfit for towing anything significant.

The most I'd tow with these would be a small utility trailer with race tires, ...

Ah bugger!
Thanks guys.

I'm undecided on whether to love you our hate you for telling me this before I buy though... emotions battling rational thought.

Seriously though, thanks.

What about towing with a 75 V6? Anyone had experience with this? If I can track down a towbar I plan to tow camping gear once or twice a year and maybe the occasional small load with a 6x4.

Same fragile drive train, just a little beefier.

I had a hitch on my 3.0, the factory rating was 3,500 lbs, IIRC. I'd never tow that much. I did tow a small utility trailer with a scooter on it for one long trip, maybe 1,000 lbs max, don't think I'd go much more than that.

The attachments listed below from GTV 2.0 owners manual #3194 dated 1/83 list the towing capacity as 1000kg.

I can always rely on you for info Jim :D

Hope you are well.

What are your thoughts on the drivetrain issues as mentioned above?
