In my 73 GTV, when traveling at a steady 60 and 65 mph (3-4-5th gear) there will be what I would describe as a loud snap or bang. It seems to come from below the handbrake. (At first I thought it was a backfire, but I after hearing it many times I am convinced it is not a backfire.) Sometimes it happens every mile or two on smooth straight highway. On bumpy highways (same speed) it will happen usually but not always when I go over bumps. Sometimes it does not happen when I go over bumps. It does not happen at other speeds, or on winding roads (even if bumpy, although I rarely go 60 on a winding road). The handbrake doesn't work great (I have not had time to adjust it) but the car otherwise runs well.

Has anyone else had this problem or care to venture a guess as to what it may be?
