Looking for Solex PII

4876 Views 12 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  HeinBrand
Hi everyone!

I am new to the forum but I've been reading the posts from afar for quite some time though.
I am restoring a 1954 css tipo 3. I am looking for a set of solex PII carbs with the inlet manifold. The car was running on weber 45s which gave great power. I might keep it this way but I'd like to set aside a set of original units.
I've been seeing a lot of porsche 356 solexes for sale. I've read that they are different form the alfa carbs. In what way? is it just the the jetting or are the castings different too? Anyway to adapt them?
I am located in belgium.

Thanks for your help

All the best

Christian,

AlfaBB member 'franco_veloce' had a pair for sale a while ago.

Having some experience with these carbs (because of a certain 356 Super 90 in the family), getting these to run well is an art and they require very precise calibration. We found that there was only one specialist who was able to ream out the throats and fit oversized butterflies to correct air leaks, but they are in the USA.

Best of luck in your search.

Alex.
Carb reconditioning

Alex , I have been looking to get my triple solex PH44's restored and I have been recommended to go to carburettor exchange in Leighton Buzzard . They have quoted me around £900 to rebuild the carbs , but this included rebushing the butterfly shafts, reaming out the carb throats and fitting oversize butterflies. They believe this is the only way to prevent leaks due to the carbs being made from mazak.

So maybe there is someone in the UK who can rebuild your carbs
They restored the pair of 40 DCOE 2 on my car about fourteen years ago and did a pretty good job. I had the bodies zinc passivated to keep corrosion at bay and the result was effective. £300 each doesn't sound bad when you consider the potential for extensive machining and new parts. When the Solexes fitted to the Super 90 were rebuilt during the first winter of ownership, we realised that the butterflies had worn a subtle but problematic groove in the throats and so reaming etc was the only possible option. They are now back from the US and being re-re-built by my father, who has the tenacity and ability to get things just right.

Hi All,

the normal "Porsche" solex P tipo do not fit the Alfa 1900css

only the very rare Porsche 1e seri 356 Carrera and spider have these same as 1900CSS

all other > 56 years Porsche have the newer solex PII seri with different mounting flanges

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your advice and recommendations. I won't go the Porsche Solex pii route. I don't think it is worth the trouble. At least for now... I am still confident I will find the original carbs sooner or later.

Thanks!

Chris
I would like to give a shameless plug for my master carburetor specialist, Omar Rodriguez. Omar has been my mechanic for about 3 years. He is a very low profile guy, so you may have never heard of him, but he has worked on many prestigious automobiles from all over the world. His client list is quite impressive. He is a wizard with all carburetors. He can do just about anything in terms of mechanical work and carburation fabrication. In addition to being very talented, Omar has a great work ethic and charges very reasonable rates. His work and record keeping are meticulous. His shop "Just Carburetors" is in North Miami, Fla. 305-940-5136

Franco,

You are the one that advised that Porsche and 1900 Pii are not the same. Are these Porsche or Alfa?

Do you still have this carburetor? If yes, please contact me.

Thanks, Joe
Are you still looking for a set of 40 PII carbs? We have have a set with intake manifold, air plenum and airfilterbox.
