Not looking for anything extravagant or specific, I'd like to just see what's out there and what some of my possible options are. If you've got anything in project car condition, especially if it's been sitting in a yard for ages, let me know!

You'd help your cause if you specified where you live. Someone with a $1,500, non-running Alfa in their back yard who lives on another continent isn't going to be much use to you.

Also your budget, whether you fancy an open or closed car, do you prefer a mechanical project, bodywork project or a car needing both....

Ah yeah that would be smart, I'm in southeastern New York. I'm looking at a budget of around $1,000 with either type of work needed.

Bravo for wanting to get involved via a learning by doing, here on Alfa BB members have covered many topics that can assist. I would spend ~6 months reading every post about the different models like this post https://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/gt-1963-1977/526026-1966-giulia-sprint-gtv-restoration.html. Select a few you like, spend some of your $1000 on a set of books, https://www.alfaholics.com/parts/105-series/misc/alfa-romeo-arese-giulia-105-book-collection/ and then come back with a revised budget of your time in hours and years and cost of parts, engine rebuilds, suspension, interior, cost of work space etc.

How about a 1991 Alfa 164L, manual trans, red with tan gut, 118k, straight metal, engine and trans operate flawlessly, worn interior, clearcoat problems, drive anywhere. 3 owner local car, always maintained by Alfa Specialists, full history known. I acquired her 18 months ago from the local Alfa - Maserati Dealership. I was there ordering a 2018 Giulia, and she was a fresh trade-in (on a new 2017 Giulia purchase). I now have both. New parts and service of note: New clutch about 15K ago. The rest is service that I have performed since purchase. Tires, camshaft timing belt, coolant flush, clutch master and slave cylinders and flex hose, brake fluid flush, a proper gp31 battery, and of course a Castrol GTX 20W-50 oil change. Located in central PA, near York. Asking $1950.00 [email protected]

Good day Brian. Frank and Tommy here. We own a 1979 Spider, it's Inglese Verde in color, it's a non running car, however the engine is not seized and does turn over. Spica fuel injection, some rust, drivers floor. Rockers are in good shape. Some rust in the front belly pan. All the parts are there for the car, but not gas tank. We can sent pictures via email. Hi have a 1987 Spider Graduate in Atlanta. The head gasket is leaking oil and its got a few other problems but it runs.

Owning an Alfa is very special. These cars are phenomenal and I feel gives you the most bang for the buck. Parts are available, but be careful of getting the wrong year or type of Alfa. Rust is also an issue on a lot of Alfa's and the time you spend repairing it could be quite extensive. If possible, start with a car that isn't in demand, like a 164, late 70's GT or possibly a Spider. Just know that you're in for a lot of work. Trying to restore a $1000 Alfa is most likely more work and expense than it's worth, but I applaud your ambition.

Here are a couple for starters: 1977 Alfa Romeo
or 1974 Alfa Romeo Spider project/parts car (East Hollywood)

The first looks the most do-able. The last would give you the best chance of re-couping your investment if you throw in the towel.

Remember that you can get a decent running Alfa for $3-4K, so if you buy a "project car" for $1K and put $2-3K into it, you would've been better off buying a $3-4K car. Just my 2 cents.

But I have another!
74 Spider. One owner, before it came to me. Complete and extremely original, including the XAS tires! Started and ran when I put her in the barn 2 years ago. Needs some tlc. Asking $5k. York, PA area. [email protected]

Do yourself and your wallet a favor. Just buy and drive a nice one. It will cost you half as much as a project car will to finish, and you can enjoy it now. Fixing one up isn't as fun as you think.
