Hello all. I just purchased a 91 164L. Overall the car seems fine but I have one concern. The previous owner advises me that the timing belt tensioner has been "locked" by her mechanic. I'm not sure exactly what this means and can only guess. What I am guessing scares me. I haven't yet had the time to pull the covers and look at the tensioner. Anyone have any idea about this locked tensioner practice? Thanks in advance.

I suppose it could be one of three things. A Tom Zat fixed tensioner, an original oil fed tensioner with the oil return plugged up or maybe they found a way to lock up a thermal mechanical tensioner. It's going to be up to you to decide what to do, but I would undo it and put a new thermal mechanical tensioner on it. You will likely get opinions on this though. I would look into what the mechanic has done ASAP.
