Hello,

I want to add LSD to my 71 GTV and was wondering
if I can simply buy the center section of a LSD
equiped car and bolt this to my axle/axle tubes?

To clarify, I want to buy only the rear differntial
carrier with the LSD inside, not the complete rear
axle. This will save a bundle in shipping.

Also I think all the rear axles are bsically the
same for Spiders/GTV's/Berlinas?

Any feedback is appreciated.

Kevin,
The LSD came on the 2 liter cars. The axle shafts are smaller and have different number of splines on the early non limited slip rear end. At least that's how every rear end I have taken apart have been. From my experience with this topic, you would need a complete rear end.

I'd have to say it wouldn't fit for a couple of reasons. Even thought the axle tubes may physically fit, the carrier preload is adjusted by shimming the carrier bearings. Since the outer race of the right side (I think) carrier bearing is in the axle tube, changing the tube may change the preload. Not a world stopper by any means but the result may be excessive noise and/or wear.
I also recall something about the splines on the axles being different between the 1750 and 2l; either the number or the shape of them or something. The last thing is the pinion flange holes for the driveshaft bolts . The 1750 uses 8mm and the 2l has 9mm.

Thanks for all the replies, I guess the anwser
is to buy a complete axle.
