So, yeah - there's that little override knob / pin to pull on the bottom, but what causes the bloody thing to fail (or in the case of this car, to function so intermittently) to begin with...?

Is there a good known fix?

I just installed a short length of aquarium air line (with a slit up one side) on it's shaft to keep it permanently pulled, ie, key released. Never think about it anymore. Who needs it anyway, just another Fed required doodad.

installation of a small tie wrap on the shaft was a 'sotto voce' fix provided to the dealers back in the day. I think the thing is a huge pain in the rear so I've tie-wrapped every one I;ve had and done the same for many others.

Its a mechanical solenoid and it gets sticky and the pushbutton switch is about as good as the window switches if not a tad bit worse.

JJ bypass the thing you will be way happier for it. Pull the shaft down, put a little tie wrap or aquarium tubing or hang a 20 LB lead cake pulling it down so you dont have to fuss with it
