You really need to hone the bores so that the rings have a good surface to seat on. Otherwise you'll just make an oil burner. Also, if the engine has some time on it, there will always be a narrow ridge at the top where the rings do not rub; this musty be taken off to avoid damaging the new rings.

It's hard to do these things without getting a lot of crud into the engine.

You can rent the ridge reamer at O'Reilly's. Buy a properly sized bottle brush hone and do a couple of strokes in each cylinder.

Then slap the rings it.
