Guys,

Have an intermittent problem, getting more regular.

Sometimes when I turn the key, I get nothing but the dash lights (gen + oil).

Battery is fine, measuring about 12.58 volts.

I don't even get any faint clicks.

Jump starting has no effect - I have to clutch start it.

Interested in your thoughts and trouble shooting advice for the solenoid/starter or any other gremlin you may think is at fault.

Cheers,
Wazza.

Test light from battery neg to thin solenoid wire.at starter
Turn key as if to start engine.
If test light works= lights up= solenoid-starter motor problem.
If it doesn't,,possible ign switch or related wiring.
Also check earths from battery to body, and body to original body to gearbox.
Check main starter motor wire to starter is secure firmly.
Before checking main battery cable to starter motor= disconnect battery

You could also try

Get someone to turn they key while you hit the starter motor.
Use a suitable rod between to firewall and rear carby to hit the starter motor.
Make sure the car is in neutral with the handbrake on.

Sometimes this will activate the starter,,and verify it needs an overhaul.

Thanks guys.

I now have to wait for the problem to re-occur to try out the above.

Don't you just hate intermittent problems.

Guys,

Guilia Veloce wins the prize with the 'turn the key and spank the starter' tip.

This injected some life into the starter.

Removal and inspection of the suspect item revealed a heavily carbonised commutator. Cleaned with wet & dry and liberal spraying of Elecktra Clean and reassembled.

Working like a bought one.

Thanks,
Wazza.

Without any "click" or other sound, it is more likely that the solenoid is the culprit
Been there, done that

The starter is not disengaging correctly - takes a few seconds of rattling before it stops.

Did we miss anything in the re-assembly?

Thanks,
Wazza.
