How would you clean a head for disassembly/repair?

I've found some good articles and videos about DIY cleaning to start repair work, but I was curious about any special need-to-knows before I got started.

Since the head is aluminum I know some degreasers can leave a nasty chalky, oxidized finish. I don't have access to a blast cabinet or anything like that, and no way am I using the oven.

I kind of plan to do an initial cleaning so it's easier to disassemble what needs to come apart, then clean everything a little more thoroughly, like exhaust ports and such. I have a nice, large plastic tub for the work and lots of brushes, rags and other tools.

So I guess my question, what sort of solvent should I be using? Brake cleaner, carb cleaner, big purple jug, big green jug, Dawn, etc?
