My car has an aldon flame thrower coil, but otherwise standard set up - using the original points.

I took the car out for a drive today and got back home after 20 mins sitting in traffic. I noticed that the coil was really hot - almost too hot to touch, is this normal? Its been on the car for about 600 miles, and has worked fine so far.

Perhaps that coil is intended to be used with a ballast resistor.

The fact that your car runs OK, doesn't mean that the coil is happy - increased temperature will shorten its life.

I don't know that coil, but, as Jay says, it might be intended to have a ballast resistor.
It may alså be that your points need changing or regabbed. Remember that a high tension coil shortens the points life.
