What causes this? Series 2, Spica Spider starts and runs unevenly on three cylinders. Pulling the high tension lead on #1 proves it to be the culprit- no change in engine note. Holding the lead in close proximity to the plug shows nice blue spark jumping and engine runs on all four. When lead is pushed back on to plug, #1 cuts out again. Repeat with same result. Any ideas?

Wild guess: damaged distributor cap? It would explain why pulling the leads (thus applying and releasing slight pressure on the cap) would cause such unpredictable results. They're only like $10 or something......I'd start by replacing the cap, plugs, and plug wires if they haven't been replaced any time in the recent past.
