Was over today and able to do some more research into the car and its history. The car is a '55 Guilietta Sprint. He had corresponded with Alfa and this is the response he forwarded to me:
Referring to your request we are informing you as follows.
According to our documentation files the chassis number AR 1493.01351 and engine number AR 1315.01384 originally corresponds to an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint manufactured on the 17th December 1955 and sold on the 28th December 1955 to Hoffman Motor Car Company from New York, USA.
The body colour is Alfas red (AR 501).
Please be advised that this answer is intended solely for information use and its contents does not certify the authenticity of this car.

he also had some photos of when he bought the car:
according to his historical data, though, this car should be column shift and should have different grilles ("no eggcrate" he said).
I did get a chance to take a couple pics with my ipod (they're rough, sorry)
as you can see here, the original block was patched

anyway, right now he is looking for inspiration, parts, and help. He wants to return it to as-original-as-possible including returning to column shift and original grilles. If you know someone or something please say a something!
