Hello friends I finally had a 2 days off yes 馃檪 so today I went for a ride around the block and when I parked I looked at my shoe and see some coolant stain so look closely and finout the heater core is leaking 馃槥
Now I am not an expert but I like do things my self and have a little mechanic knowledge...
Can anyone help me figure what the best and first thing to do to at least stop the leakage .

Yes, could be the heater core (heater matrix). The leak could from the heater control valve, which fits on to the end of the core - or from the coolant pipe which joins to the valve. If you unbolt the plastic duct on the side of the heater box, you can see more and perhaps work out where the leak is coming from.

Replacement heater cores and control valves are available from UK Alfa specialists such as classic alfa and alfaholics - and I'm sure others (I'm not sure where you are located). I replaced mine as they had rusted out. The previous owner had drained and completely by-passed the heater by joining the 2 hoses together in the engine bay.

Replacing the heater core is not an easiest of jobs - a lot of time laying on your back with your head in either footwell to remove the heater box!!!!

Hi Malcolm thank you for the sharing your flicker very nice pictures.
I just bought this car few weeks ago and I'm still working on calibrate/ tuning up the engine since the car was parked for 10 years so at this moment I'll rather just bypass the hostess together and eliminate the leak inside.

I recently replaced the leaking heater control valve in my GTV. The original heater core (original owner of car) tested good, but you may wish to replace yours anyway. Checking a new heater core (if purchased) for leaks before installation, is a good idea.

As already mentioned, it's a job that takes time to accomplish. I first removed the dash and console, then removed the heater box assembly from the car for inspection and control valve replacement.

While everything is apart, you may wish to consider replacing the heater hoses and clamps, as well.

Cut the two black hoses that go through the firewall and splice them together and forget it. It will let you concentrate on other priorities that you have. As said R&R is a PITA best done when you are a situation where you must have working heater. Besides the term "heater" is a misnomer.. they should be called "thawers"

I've had the heater box in and out a few times without the need to remove the dash or console - just.

I've found the best way is to unclip the lower section (4 metal spring clips) - the 2 at the back are right up against the bulkhead. This gives just enough wriggle room to pull the lower section out sideways in to the passenger footwell.

The lower section has the blower motor and fan and the flaps that direct the air to feet or screen.

The matrix is fitted to the upper section - which is held in place by 4 nuts on studs on the bulkhead.

Thank you that is exactly what I did and hopefully dont need to fixit for few months

Now that I'm reading this make me feel like go ahead and try fixing right now 馃檪
Hopefully this weekend I have some more time and see what I can do

10 years ago I had a same problem. I struggled to remove the heater unit, but finally I unlocked 4 clips and could remove the heater separately (1st lower part, 2nd upper part). Then, I pluged the hoses with bolts and hose bands. I attached some pictures. Please try! Takeshi

Only thing I'd add to the above is the suggestion to take out one of the front seats if not already out. It's only 4 bolts and it makes working under the dash a whole lot easier and more comfortable.

Since we are on the subject... I need to get to the fan motor. It's locked up and getting power.. years of sleep have probably tightened up the fan bearings... any advice ? Can I get to it without taking the whole unit out ( '72 Super)? Didn't want to hyjack but it all fits the discussion if you know what I mean. Appreciate any comments. I think it is still a littte of a booger but I don't want to remove the who unit if I can avoid it. Thanks for your replies... Winter project. Never use the heater but lost any use of the defroster. Uncle

Correct. Actually I removed both right and left front seats to secure the working space.

Regrding the heater blower, you need to remove only the 1st lower piece unlocking 4metal clips. The blower motor is located in it. In my case, the motor didn't move after sleeping 10 years. But I cleaned the motor and replace the carbon brush & wires, then the motor revived.

I Fergat.. You mentioned the 4 clips holding the bottom on and two were up against the firewall. Did you just remove the two easy ones at hand and wiggle the bottom free to unhook the ones against the firewall?

Regarding the fan motor, mine was toast when I got my car. New motors are available from the usual suspects (e.g. classic alfa, alfaholics, highwood alfa - in the UK.

I had some problems with the quality of the replacement motors, which generally come complete with the fan. I found many of the fans were either rippled, which means they rubbed against the casing. So, I fitted my old fan to the new motor. Some of the motors I received were fitted with an inappropriate power resistor, which dropped the speed on the slow setting too low.
