Just finishing up a clutch replacement on a 91 164 B that I bought fix, clean up, and sell.

I noticed that the two hoses coming out of the fire wall are open and have been bypassed. Any thoughts as to why? Mine would be that the heater core is leaking. We're these known for corroded cores or anything like this?

I'll probably end up selling it like this and disclosing the condition to let the new owner deal with it.

Otherwise car is running great and I kept the PO from parting it out.

Could be one of two items. First, the plastic tank ends of the heater core crack just like the car radiator end tanks, and start to leak or worse just blow out and spurt coolant everywhere. The plastic tank ends are the answer to a question nobody asked. Dumb idea. The PO might have just bypassed the heater to get rid of the leak.

Or... it could be that the PO bypassed the heater for summer, as older heaters in 164's send a lot of residual heat into the passenger area even with the controls set to cold. This is because of poor sealing around the core and ducting. You know that the heater has hot coolant running through it all the time regardless, and some install a shut off valve in one of the hoses coming into the engine bay to shut the flow to the heater off in the summer time. I've done this on my 91S and it makes a difference in the summer even in Seattle.

Maybe thats what was done. I've been reluctant to hook it back up for fear of coolant going everywhere inside the car. I do not see nay evidence of leakage.

Maybe I'll just try to flow some water through it to see what comes out and see if there are any losses.

Thanks
