I’ve seen lots of posts where people look for/get advice on how to get their brake to work ,but mine is almost the opposite problem - it engages fully on the first notch, or rather it engages fully just before the first notch so it doesn’t end up holding.

The cable seems to move freely, should I be adjusting the star wheel or adjusting at the lever end?

Yes. The handbrake works a small drum brake inside the rear hub. I would loosen the cable adjuster so that it has no infulence on the brakes, get the star wheel adjustment set then adjust the cable so the brake is applied with 3-4 clicks of the handle.

And, FWIW, I suggest that you apply the handbrake while holding the button down then release the button to set it rather than pulling up on the handle and letting the ratchet go click-click-click. This avoids wear on the ratchet teeth.

Cheers. Should the click wheel be going in a particular direction? Clockwise / counter clockwise or towards /away from the rim?

PS like the avatar. One of our cats is called Hobbes!
