Yep, I posted this in the GTV6 area, but it applies here, too:

Has anyone replaced the Hall Unit sensor in their V-6 distributor? Hall Unit failure is fact of life on BMW air-cooled two-cylinder motorcycles from the '80s and replacement of the entire distributor unit (the 'bean can') is several hundred dollars.

What those guys figured out is that the Hall sensor itself is a $20 Honeywell part that's easily found in electronics supply houses and fairly easily replaced in the bean can.

Has anyone found out about this for the distributors in our cars?

Thanks!

I know it's a pretty common failure on digifant volkswagens, and rebuilt distributors are quite expensive. At least with alfas there is little demand for the used ones.
