After 42 years, the recently restored RHD GTA AR*752648* was reunited yesterday with the "soon" to be restored RHD GTA AR*752507* .

It is thought that the two GTAs last competed against each other at the VIR Trans Am in 1966, where they ran 1st (648) and second (507) in class with the teams of Kwech/Andrey and Richards/Alderman at the wheel, respectively.

While both GTAs did run the Trans Am in following years, current information would not put them on a track together.

Interestingly 752648, with a much higher S/N than 752507, is recorded at Alfa Romeo with a build date of July 20, 1965 while 752507 was built a day later on July 21, 1965. They went through Autodelta 2 days apart. 22/1/66 for 752648 and 25/1/66 for 752507.

Both were sold into the Alfa Romeo Inc. Trans Am promotional program and were present at the inaugeral Trans Am at Sebring on March 25, 1966. There, 752507 finished 3rd in class and 752648 finished 4th in class, after the 2 factory GTAs, in 1st and 2nd.

GTA 752507 is seen on the chassis plate behind 752648 in the first picture.

Ciao

Great pictures! What's the plan for 752 507?
Hey Anthony thanks for your interest.

My current thinking is to take 752507 to the yellow BOBCOR livery of 1972; more specifically the early 1972 livery with SS bumpers and grill centre, rather than the late livery with black bumpers and grill centre.

The paint will be stripped from the panels looking for and documenting which panels may have survived from 1965 and which were replaced later and when. We are also looking for evidence of any graphics.

I expect that all the skins will likely be removed.

The frame and cage structure will be checked, repaired, straightened, and returned, where reasonable, to the 1972 configuration.

The steel nose will be replace with aluminum, as we know it was put on after 1972. The plastic fenders will be removed and the aluminum restored or replaced.

I hope to be able to retain as much of the original, (original in this case being 1972), aluminum and other features of the chassis as is reasonably and economically possible.

The mechanicals will be more or less period correct. Large ATES front and rear, 1750 up rites, sliding block rear suspension (early or late), L/S Diff., fuel cell, Bendix pumps, Campy and Minilite 14 x7 wheels, twin plug on 1750, C/R Trans, large steering wheel, …………..etc.

Of course I will be receiving guidance from the GTA/ Trans-Am Archeologist who is involved with the restoration.

My intent is to have her much as she was for that first Trans Am race in 1972, not over restored but a (very) freshened up race car with less bondo in her than she was likely carrying then.

Time line is as expeditious as possible.

Ciao

Ken

Restoration of a significant car

Ken,

Great to see you on the path to restoration of 752507. The plan is to have 752648 picked up today by the trucking company and on its way to California. It looks like Roman could use the room to work on your car. Bob Cozza was at Amelia this year.
What do you think the final weight will be with the 1972 period restoration.

ken, roman does some nice work on these historic racers. they look a little more authentic than some of the other "overrestored" restorations.
