I would appreciate if one of you might know what these 1mm holes are for?

This is on a GTAm Lucas Metering Unit Base, and after cleaning, it appears to be magnesium, so should it be painted or left as is?

I believe that would be a weep hole for fuel. The lucas metering unit has a diaphram between the metering unit and the vacuum control unit. If the diaphram fails, fuel can flow out of the metering unit thru the vacuum control and into the distributor. This provides an indication that that has happened. At least thats the way it works on the Triumphs that use the Lucas setup.
