Over the holidays I finally started the teardown of my rusty old friend.
The most used equipment so far had been the dustpan and brush - sweeping up everything that falls off when I exert any force onto bolts etc!

Once its stripped then its off to the sodablasters.

Anyway - please see some photos of progress so far. front and rear running gear and interior/glass left to do.

Front lower corner virtually non-existent!

Front anti-rollbar mounting and rail rusted away

right rear

left rear - axle strap mount rusted off

left side

right side footwell and sill/rocker
Thanks - im trying to get it as good as I possibly can in the metal, to minimise the need for lots of filler down the line.
Just had a look at where you started with this rebuild, you've done a fantastic job, and I,ve enjoyed watching your journey. Regards John

Having wrapped up the front end work im really looking forward to moving onto the next phase.
I'm resisting saying that im over half way on the body resto, but..... ;)

This thread is a great resource. I have just started to play with mine and thankfully it is not as far gone as yours, but my hat is off to you for getting it this far.

I think the next instalment will be the upper A-pillar repairs.
I need to repair/rebuild both sides. It will be a voyage of discovery for us all :)

Btw: if you are interested I've been there and repaired my upper A pillars. All layers. Photos in one of my restoration threads.

Upper a-pillar that requires repair. Other side not quite so bad.

Amazing how even though both our cars had "upper" A pillar rust, they rusted in different places. Yours really is UPPER, mine I shall now call middle.

I will watch with enthusiasm

Haha - my car embraced a full 'equal opportunities' approach to rust.
Lower, middle and upper parts were all encouraged to join in :)

Gawd knows how it got to rust that high up though - you would think it might stem from the seam behind the windscreen rubber, but no?!?

Mind if I ask what welder you are using?
Im looking at doing some work on mine and looking for advice on one for a beginner.
Amazing work btw, think most would have walked away a long time ago
or sold it off to Australia which is what I did...
cheers

Hi
Thanks for the supportive comments. I bought this welder second hand. I’m not sure if Sealey is a brand you get in US. I’d say it’s a slightly ‘above average’ welder for home use. Variable power and wire feed rates. I have to say it’s been great.

I have it set up to run 0.6mm wire which is ideal for panels and welding anything up to about 3mm plate.

It came with the trolley, which is a must - moving around the workshop without it would be a nightmare. That said making the trolley yourself is a good practice job to start welding 🤓

Request for a photo <img src="http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Smilie" class="inlineimg" />

Please could someone post up a couple photo from the angle, as below, of the A-pillar on an original car?

Just so when im finishing up my repairs it looks correct where the wing and a-pillar join up

Thank in advance

Great work Bigmart.

This is from a 66’ which should be the same and trust that someone with the same model as yours can confirm!
Cool thanks
I thought there might be a horizontal seam, and it looks like there is indeed!

Had a spare hour this evening and was itching to get back into the workshop after a nice relaxing holiday, so started to make a part for the upper a-pillar.

I am folding and curving the inner strip and rain channel section. I’m doing this prior to cutting the old one out - so I can use it as a reference.

I folded the sheet steel up with a hobby vice mounted folder, which is ok but doesn’t give a sharp fold (more of a radius than a sharp 90degrees) so had to hammer it sharper against a square bar to get something more like the original part.

Then fired up the shrinker/stretcher to form the curve. We are about 90percent there - needs some tweaking still to get radius of curve perfect.

Here is progress so far
