Me again - did a separate post since for a different subject.

What is best to use to seal around the outside lip when installing the gas tank? Also, what is best to use to replace the foam padding on the bottom of the gas tank cover plate?

thanks.

I just replaced mine and used the weather strip that can be used for camper tops, etc. I got it at Home Depot. It is wide enough to cut into half and double up as you go around the tank. Someone else has used it on this board. My foam padding was still in good shape so I didn't replace it.

On my 83 Spider the original seal was a black asphaltic caulking. When I recently reinstalled the tank after having it cleaned and coated I used black RTV silicone sealer to make an in-place gasket. I ran a thick bead all the way around and then let it cure before installing the tank. Worked fine -- it's a weathertite and squeak free seal.

strip caulk

look for 3M strip caulk. I think it is only available in black now. Last year I think I paid $10 - $12 for a box. enough for several tank installations.
