Hi all,

After a LONG storage period my 750 Spider had LOTS of grime in the fuel tank. I took our all the fuel and removed the Filter Plug for the fuel tank. The filter was also dirty and damaged.

Questions:
-Suggestions for cleaning the fuel tank.
-Is a Stainless Steel fuel tank a good option? Sources in the US?
-Filter plug sources?

Thanks all,

I recently used a Fuel Tank Repair Kit from POR-15. The kit includes cleaner to remove sludge and varnish, then a metal prep solution to etch the metal and lastly a sealer.

The cleaning was done in two stages. The first stage washed out a lot of varnish. The second stage was rather clean, so the first stage must have been very effective. The metal prep left the inside of the tank looking like new metal. Finally, the sealer coated the tank with a silver "paint-like" material that is supposed to seal pinholes and prevent any future rust.

I'm happy with the results so far. Here's a link:

The rebuilt engine on my '74 Spider is almost ready, with a new Ingram pump. Should I consider cleaning the fuel tank before the engine is installed, or will the filters catch anything that might be in there, allowing me to clean the tank later?

I replaced the fuel pump and filters last year and the fuel seemed to be clean, so I'm not overly concerned... but maybe a clean tank would be prudent?

I second that... Or third that.. Whatever. Yes, it would be good for all the parts to start off clean. The extra effort is not that great.

I have a '65 Giulia Veloce Spider that has been stored for over 30 years. I have it back running , but I think that have a clogged fuel tank. Does anyone know if there is an internal filter in the tank and if so, how to get it out and a source for a replacement filter?
