Managed to figure out that fuel doesn't properly reach the mechanical pump from tank... so to arrive home and not stop every few hundred yards to throw fuel down the carbs: produce a positive fuel supply.
Possible problems?: Air in fuel line?, blocked fuel line? low fuel level?, all of the above?

Check for a blocked tank vent causing a vacuum to form in the tank and starve the pump. Loosen the tank cap to equalize any pressure differential, then see if it runs better.

Crap in the tank. floatie stuff. When you run low and you suck down fuel it fills the area around the tank outlet thus limiting how much gets out.

You can survive by keeping the tank topped up until you have time to remove the tank and clean. ( pretty easy to do)

Just one slightly loose hose between the tank and the pump will allow air in and you will loose suction. It will not leak fuel because it is not under pressure.
