My '77 Spider with Spica FI has what seems to be a dead or sleeping fuel pump.

When the car cranked but wouldn't start a while ago, I didn't hear any humming/noise from behind the seats and the fuel pump light stayed on. I checked the FP fuse which was OK and pulled the electrical connection from the pump to find power there. Plugged it back in and tapped the pump a bit with a hammer but still no signs of life.

Doesn't seem as it there could be anyother problem but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything. Assuming I need to replace the pump, what options do I have and where is good place to make the purchase?

Many thanks.

Thanks for the quick response John.

I'm not sure what you mean by the "supply pump." If you mean the regular, main fuel pump, I didn't see a "ground wire."

My Spider has no pump in the tank if that is what you mean as did a couple of my Volvos.

I assume the pump should run whenever the key is put into the "Run" position regardless of any other problem. Is that correct? Whether it pumps fuel or not is something else.

Thanks. Ralph

Check to ensure that the ground wire from the supply pump to the car body is clean and tight.

I located a Bosch 69412 fuel pump for $ 120 which looks very similar to one another vendor shows for the Spider listed at $ 220.

Does anyone know anything about this unit or the specs for the original pump such as PSI output?

Naturally, I'd like to save a few $$ if possible. Thanks.

My external fuel pump has two hoses, input and output. I ordered one from IAP and it came today. Didn't open it because the picture shows an in-tank pump, NOT WHAT I NEED. I'm going to call them tomorrow to check to see what they sent to me. No sense opening it until I know it is what I need.

Thanks for the feedback.

No ground wire?? If there isn't one, it's no wonder that the pump isn't working. There should be two wires to the main supply pump (right rear wheel well area). One is hot, and the other is a ground wire that grounds to the body close to the installed pump.

Go to Ingram Enterprises, Inc. || Spica Pump Rebuilds and download the Fuel Systems Guide there. It'll tell you everything you need to know.
