The front cross member on my car was replaced by the PO around 10-12 years ago, the paint on the front part of the member and the top channel where the radiator sits has now flaked off completely and it is pretty rusty. I hope that it hasn't got to the point where replacement is necessary but I can't see any obvious way to access the front part of the x member to do , short of cutting the bottom of the valence away.

My car is a mk2 so there are two holes in the front panel. Is there a way to treat rust in this area without full surgery? I wondered about blocking up all the drain holes with duct tape and blu tack and filling up the space between the valence and x member with a liquid de-rusting solution - is that hopelessly optimistic?

I guess this area normally needs to be painted before the front panel is welded on? So far I have just sprayed waxoyl at it through the holes in the valence, maybe that is the best I can hope for!
