While working on the control arm for someone else's 164 yesterday, I noticed the rear bush seemed more flexible than I remember them being. I took off the washer and removed the plastic insert, and noticed that the space for the plastic insert is off-centre, as shown in the picture below.

Is this normal, or is this an indication that the rubber is worn or compressed?

I'd say it's worn out. You could always just put the spacer back in (or leave them out) and fill the voids with liquid polyurethane (the kind people use to make their own bushings). ;) Might work really well.
