You are only 5 away. Tell us about it and work your way up to 10 by adding to this thread for your story board on the 91 164L you just got.

You have any good history on when timing belt was changed and mileage on it? NUMBER 1 Item to change if no good believable history!

I asked the Ebay dealer where i bought the car if timing belt was changed,he said he didn't know.(mileage on my baby is 132000) so i am hoping it was changed before the 100000 mark?
All i can tell you is that i drove it around a bit,got the oil changed and added premium gas in it.
But like I said, temperature started going up,looks like fan is not kicking in at all.
Hopefully, tomorrow, the mechanic i found will be able to tell me more about any issues.
For 91,the body is in great shape, the interior as well,no rips, dents or fading.
Keeping my fingers crossed :)

You need a timing belt change pronto! This is not a 100,000 timing belt car. We change them at 35,000 miles along with water pump and then water pump again at second belt change.

Alfa originally tired to say change TB at 50,000 miles and they were having belts fail before that and bending valves.

Trying to scare you because there have been so many 164 engines with timing belt issues.

Pirate, I would contact the Alfa Romeo Club of Atlanta. They should be able to help with a good local mechanic.

Welcome to the Board, Pirate...

Yes, do let us all know how things work out at our mechanic's...
Hope to see some pics when your post count allows!

What attracted you to the 164, if I may ask? We all love to hear owners' Origin Stories..

Cheers,
- Art

I am following your advice and told mechanic to change the TB and water pump.
It also needs boots for tie end rods and sensor for radiator fan.
It will be ready to roll on Wednesday.
Thank you for your advice.

Mechanic seems to know his stuff.
As for me,my uncle in Italy had an alfa 164,loved it when i went to visit and i always wanted one,but back then ,being a struggling single dad, kids came first, could not afford one until now.
I saw this one on Ebay,

Parts list for changing timing belt and water pump on 12v V6

Parts list for changing timing belt and water pump:

I did not include upper or lower radiator hoses which have to be disconnected to change timing belt and/or water pump.

You need to download cam timing pdf template so mechanic does not have to remove valve covers to verify cam timing against TDC mark on crankshaft pulley.
