Some more panels in place. The lower strip has been spot welded. That is really easy, as long as the spot welder is set up correctly. If not, the spots look beautiful but will jump open if stressed.

the planishing hammer and shrinker/stretcher is from Eckold a Swiss/German company.

Here in Europe their "Kraftformer" is regarded to be the ultimate machine for single or small series panel forming. The price for these machines is prohibitive.http://www.eckold.com/en-us/home.aspx

Fitted the drain pipes to the sill, ths time made out of copper instead of mild steel.

Roughly made the wheel housing, (the covering panel between fender and the housing is still missing). In order to fit it properly, the fender should serve as fixing point. Unfortunately the fender also needs a lot of work before it can be used. But it is flexing by only looking at it, so I am afraid of welding panels in. Does anyone have an advice?

Hubert, have you got a gas welder? I would weld that fender repair using a gas weld. If you tack first it will eliminate distortion and as you can get behind the panel there is no problem anyway. There will be almost nil distortion in fact I have welded with basically none. The gas weld can be planished very easily - can be done without using filler rod. I have seen but haven't used it yet a dough like sustance that absorbs heat and minmises any distortion which is an added insurance in case you are not confident. It is recommended for any type of welding or brazing. As long as you have support under that panel and the two pieces are held by magnets, or little clamps there shouldn`t be a problem.

Don,

I have soldered the pipe to the panel, so I have steel-solder-copper, cleaned the spot from flux material very carefully. But will check in the office tomorrow, if and what kind of galvanic element I have created.

thanks for the advice. I have ordered two dozens of small magnets right away, very good idea and not really expensive! I will gas weld the repair panel but my problem in fact is the support.

Welding on the table will lead to an "out of shape" result. The fender has to be fitted to the car, I think. Now it turns out to be a disadvantage that I have removed so many parts from the shell. The back panel is not there, no doors, no front fender. Perhaps the best way will be to fit at least the rear panel and the fender by clamps, then tack the repair panels,weld the seam on the table, planish, ready:)

The magnets have arrived, they are really helpful!!!

The tip end of the left rear wing is finished. Still many things to do, when the wing turns out too ugly afterwards, I will use the spare one.

Hubert that is looking great. You have obviously built up a lot of skill. Imagine the cost if you were paying someone else to do this work.

I have seen something similar in one of touring63s posts, so not my idea.

The specialists may correct me, but I think, only the Berlina was made at the Lancia factory, the Coupé was made at Pininfarina.

In my opinion the coachbuilt cars draw a lot of their character from the fact that they are not symetric to nowadays tolerances. Once I was asked to examine a Flaminia Sport (offered at 245.000 Euro, more than 300kUSD). The car did not appeal to me and I was wondering why it was so. The documents said that more than 2000 hours had been spent on the body, it was perfectly symetric, over all quality was like an Audi, it was dead. Still a sculpture, no question, but without spirit.

Fortunately my skills will not be sufficient to reach that level, so "the Bugatti-Wagen" was coachbuilt in 1961, will be coachbuilt in 2014.:)

Should have paid more attention to the rear end. I now (a little bit late) noticed that the left end of the car is 15mms shorter than the right. At least the wheel housing is ready now.

What I supposed to be poor craftmanship at the factory probably was poor repair of a smaller crash.

Hubert, is it just on the face of the rear light where it is short? Is it supposed to be angled or is the inner side of the face the 15mm short side? The close up photo shows some pretty rough work on the metal and I doubt planishing it will grow you your 15mm. Might have to weld in an extension on the side it is short?

Richard, the measured length difference is to the very tip end of the wing, right below the lights.

The "seat" of the light seems to have been put in place angled. Besides the rough work I can not find any creases or bends on the neighbour panels, especially the rear center panel appears straight.

The right side also looks quite rough although not as bad as the left. The spare wing is manufactured in a much better way.

There is a small angle at the right side, too. Maybe that had been straightened by filler. Consequently the next step would be to set up an auxiliary longitudinal center line of the body shell and check the position of both rear ends.

I will find out how the position of the lights is at the other Coupé.

There are always little hiccups along the way of restoration, especially coachbuilt stuff, and previous accident repair work which often is to a very poor standard.
I guess you just go back to basics and determine firstly the proper dimensions and shaping.
It may involve you having to cut off and remake those rear light parts of the rear wings though. Just as well you obviously have the skills, and another car that you can refer to.
