I am back at doing some major work on my car, it developed a rattle coming from the bell housing.
Looks like the pilot bushing is shot, while im in there im going to to replace the clutch/PP/TO bearing, pilot bushing.
Since I had the trans out I wanted to go head and replace the synchro rings and do the first gear fix.
I have the trans apart on my table, I took it over to a mechanic friend of mines to get his opinion on the subject. Bearings and gears look great, dogs arent eaten apart. But the inner/outer synchro's could use a refresh since im in there (though I haven't had any shifting issues). Ive never pulled gears of a shaft like this, im not opposed to going to harbor freight and getting a 20 ton press, heat gun and bearing puller set to pull the gears off.
Ive read Vintre's thread and watched Jethro Bronner's video a multitude over. I talked to my mechanic friend (a classic triumph mechanic) and his concern was bending the shaft with the press, he personally didnt feel comfortable using his 12T press to do the job.
In my area finding someone who is willing to even look at an Alfa part is rocket surgery...When I had to get my head rebuilt I had to take it to a British car specialist 100 miles away (shop owner had a spider just like mine!), If my trans needed a rebuild and had damage that needing repair, I would be fine with that. But for preventative and "while im in there work" it feels a bit excessive to take time off work etc to do this.
How likely is it to bend a shaft? What concerns should I have about maybe giving this a shot?
I have the workshop manual, many pictures I took, and of course Vintres thread for reference, im just a bit afraid of screwing up a good transmission shaft.
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance as always,
Aaron
