I had a machine shop do some work on my block and they had to remove the studs on 65 Veloce block. When they removed/reinstalled the studs, they scored some of the studs and further, the studs now do not project the same length (distance) out of the block. A friend said I need to replace the studs and second, the studs need to project out of the block the same distance. Comments and advice? What might the same distance be (I.E. variation in distance among all studs?)

Scored how? Any kind of scratch etc. could be a stress riser I guess.
As to length, I'd drop the head on with a head gasket and see how much protrusion you get. If you can get the washer and nut on OK (it's a closed-top acorn nut), I'd say you're OK. I've seen factory studs vary by small amounts. How different are they? If you have either no threads, or so many threads the nut bottoms out, neither of those is good.
