I have reinstalled my rebuilt engine in a 1980 spider. I am trying to reinstall the nuts onto the studs on the crossmember where the engine mounts are attached.

What is the size and thread count of these two nuts? I'm afraid I have the wrong ones or the engine bay paint has gotten into the threads because they are not going on easily and don't want to cross thread. Thanks, Rick

They're the coarse 8mm thread, which I believe is what Jim lists above.

The studs often get really buggered up by rough engine installation/removal, lack of nuts at all that allows the mount to move around ruining the threads, and broken mount parts with the same result. Their difficult location doesn't help in getting the nuts on and off, especially if the mounts sag, limiting access.

Aah!! If they are the coarse thread then that would make them 8x1.25mm.
in mine (im pretty sure that was PO`s fault) where different size on engine block and different size on the body, though it could be difference in thread only (coarse vs regular)

I suggest , to prepare the studs for easier, safer threading, first, clean with a brass brush, or even a steel brush in the direction of the threads, all around them . then, if paint is still visible, put on with small brush some paint remover/acetone, wait a few minutes, then again, brush off the softened reside paint with the brass brush. This will assure the cleanest threads. When dry (a few seconds), apply a dab of motor oil to allow easier threading yet. Works like a charm.
