Hi guys
I'm moving on to my next project after completing my clutch replacement and rebuilding the front end with new arms and new bushings all around. My next project is to replace the emergency parking cable. Does any one out there have a "BLOW BY BLOW " procedures with and tricks I need to know before I start and struggle my way with the job ?
As Always Thanks In Advance For Any Help

Changing rear parking brake cable on the 164:

1. Jack stand the car at rear jacking points with two stands and floor jack with board under trunk floor.
2. Remove both rear wheels.
3. Verify both rear brake caliper arms are not frozen (if frozen they will need to be freed up or calipers repaired or replaced). If frozen lever(s) caliper(s) needs to be removed from car and lever shaft freed up with caliper in a vise using PB Blaster and ribbon of plumber's emery cloth to polish shaft when pulled out as far as possible and packed with moly grease (temp repair).
4. Run right seat all the way forward.
5. Remove rear ash tray, remove center console two rear hold down screws.Lift up rear of console.
6. Cut carpet under console over fairlead pulley cover plate, remove screw and metal cover over pulley/cable.
Note: there is a short cable from parking brake lever handle to pulley and long cable going to brakes is routed over pulley groove.
7. Remove cotter key from pulley pivot pin, remove pin, U-shaped bracket from pulley, remove pulley from long cable.
8 Go under car pull rubber grommet and rear cable assembly out of floor pan.
9. Remove bolts holding cable housings from rear suspension trailing arms and gas tank bracket.
9. Disconnect cable ball ends from caliper levers.
10. Install new cable assembly and reinstall removed parts.
11. Tighten nut in parking lever handle to adjust cable so handle only clicks up about 4-5 clicks.

Thanks Alfisto Steve. I tried everything you said but I think I have to replace the caliper because it is well and truly frozen in place. I have another question though. Are the Q rear calipers different from the LS rear calipers? Rock auto has them but it says they are for the Quadrofoglio. Will they fit my LS?

IMO, it is important to change the mounting of the 164 right rear hand brake cable as it approaches the caliper along the training arm. It is held with a bracket to the arm with a clip which puts a sharp curve in the cable. This sharp curve often breaks the outer sheath of the cable, which then allows water to get inside, rusting the cable and making it freeze up. It is easy to avoid this by removing that one obvious bracket, thus allowing the cable to adopt a gentler curve and thus not crack the outer sheath.

Did this on my 164 and have had no problems at all in 197k miles (of sometimes rainy Seattle weather, lol).
