Hi
Every week brings new mysteries.
I thought I'd check the timing on my 74, which was a spica and is now weber, with crane X700 electronic points. At RPM 900, strobe timing shows the reference mark corresponds to the M on the pulley. According to a workshop manual, the mark should be F at this rpm, but I don't see an F with the strobe whichever direction and however far I rotate the distributor. The car is running rich and hesitates on acceleration, although generally no major problems with performance.

Can someone shed some light on the problem? Thanks as ever to the great AR BB community.

The reference pointer is easily moved and you should assume that it is not accurate until you have checked it at TDC. If it is accurate then you are running with a lot of advance at idle. The "M" mark should only line up at around 3000 or 4000 rpm, depending upon which advance curve you have in your distributor.
