Dummy Light Question...

Hey Guys,

I just got my 164S Back from the mechanic's earlier last week.. (Just some routine maintenance that I couldnt squeeze my self under the car to fix). Any who, while driving today, I noticed that the temp gauge warning light would intermittently come on ... screaming out a red annoyance while the gauge itself marked the car as being smack on 175. I pulled over and checked.. and sure enough the car was at normal temp... so at least I know the gauge is reading properly..

This little light will randomly come on and off while driving... despite a normal operating temp...

Where do you folks think I may find the fault... Its not a big deal... but its annoying while driving at night.

Thanks in Advance
Cheers
Martin.

Yes - exactly what I have with mine.
The cause is the sensor on the thermostat housing - the one pointing forwards that has two spade terminals - one large, one small. Take these off and clean them - the light comes on when the wire is disconnected and goes off when the wire is grounded (opposite logic to what you might expect).

Seems that often the fault is the actual sensor itself - which serves both the gauge and the warning light, so it is a part unique to the 164 and difficult/expensive to buy. I have an idea of removing the sensor and 'cycling' it several times in an oven set to 120-degrees C, which might cause the switch to operate more reliably. When I get around to trying it, I will advise the results.

Cheers,
