How does the round side mirror attach to my '71 S2? Cursed stem is loose and won't stay in one place. Went out tonight to remove it and tighten a hopefully existent spring tensioner under the ball, but the screws holding it onto the door only loosen slightly; I can turn them all I want and the mirror isn't coming away. Is there a nut underneath (meaning I need to pull the door panels and vapor barrier off to take the mirror off)? Not something I should have started at 11:30 at night; at least I knew enough to give up for now before I break something.

The outside mirror(s) were designed to attach with two machine screws that go through the door skin into a flat metal plate, inside the door, that has threaded holes to recieve the machine screws. The rectangular metal plate is itself held in place with a machine screw through the door skin under the mirror mounring base. If I wasn't using this ancient computer I'd post a picture. Sound like to PO used nuts inside the door. I have one of these brackets if you need it.

Thanks, I really appreciate that. Let me take a look inside the door (maybe not before the weekend) and see what's up, and if I need the plate, I'll PM you.

Wing nuts! The PO used wing nuts. Every time I think I've gotten down to the last of the missing pieces he lost, there's another. Oy. At least my mirror isn't flopping around anymore.
