As a new owner of a '90 air-conditioned Graduate, I continue to discover new things about my car every day. Admittedly I am a neophyte as far as auto mechanics are concerned by the standards shown on this forum but I am willing to learn. The car is in good condition but in the course of researching the source of a small amount of water on the floor of the passenger's side, I learned a great deal about cowl drains and other possibilities. One of my advisors suggested that it might be condensation formed when the a/c is used. In checking that possibility out, I poked around and the attached shows what I found. The Cooler unit (identified from my CarDisk) might or might not be leaking but the greater question is:"Is this unit supposed to be factory-sealed in order to work and/or is the duct tape sufficient to keep this unit performing. Of course I know that much of the A/C system is under pressure and should not be tampered with by an amataeur but what about this Cooler unit. I will certainly appreciate any comments.
Reviewing recent zero response posts and I find it inconceivable that the usual suspects did not absolutely jump all over this opportunity to make snide "duct tape" comments. Come on gang, the guy even gave us an excellent photo! Talk about fish in a barrel.
Could it be the economy? That's my excuse...as you may deduce, I am once again between assignments.
you could at least use black duct tape!! I would see about getting an intact housing from a junker and leaving it on the shelf until you find a reason to pull the old one out. Might take twenty years, but at least you will be ready.
SteveW, thanks. I thought everyone had flat-lined on me. Used to hear more lively comments from a farm tractor forum I used to follow! On a more serious note, another responder called the unit which I identified as the "cooler" as the fan housing where condensation might form and suggested that I check a drain hose from the unit to the firewall. Did and there seemed to be a bit of looseness where the line slips up on the metal outlet tip. Checked and blew out the hose and no further trouble experienced. Thanks.
