Door Pillar Rubber Termination

1072 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Dolce86
After a great ride back from Limerock on a sunny Tuesday morning, I stepped out of the car and my a$$ wacked the rubber door gasket at its top end termination.

Ripped it clean off...see the really poor picture.

I would appreciate a picture of your end piece to see if it should terminate beneath the chrome trim piece or level with it. It seems to be a target and many Spiders that I have looked at have this rubber end torn away. In some manner, I suspect this is associated with the top and water sealing the interior (imagine no water in the car ;) )

Since I cannot deal with this ripped end and it needs to be right, if yours is in place, I would appreciate a picture.

Favali - I do not have pictures handy to send you as I am at my office. However, I recently replaced my weatherstripping for both doors and used the original stripping as my guide. The end piece rests below the chrome pillar cap and is not visible when looking at it from the top down.

I also just orderd and received from Re-originals, the plastic/rubber butt ends that fill the hole in the ends of the weatherstripping. IIRC, they ran $4.00 each. I picked up 4 just to have two extras laying around.

I also removed the chrome cap during the installation to make things easier for me. I recall it was held on by a small single screw.

Good luck

Jeff
Jeff,

Thanks for the info. I am going to order the felt-sided gaskets so I want to get it right this time. I have the rubber plugs for the ends.

One question: below the cap as in not level with the top or completely below the chrome trim piece at the paint.

Thanks again,
Rob
Rob - my apologies - I don't quite understand your question. Still only on my 4th cup of coffee:D

Rob, I can check mine tonight, but my recollection is that it's pretty close to even with the top of the chrome cap.

I read Jeff's original answer as saying that it terminates beneath (inside of) the chrome cap. Mine is definitely not like that, nor do I think it would fit under there with the rubber cap in place. I may be misunderstanding your comment, though, Jeff.
Allow me to add some additional detail - sorry if I was confusing you guys.

There are actually two pieces that run along side each other - One being the portion that grabs the rail for mounting purposes and the other is the hollow rubber portion that actually acts as the seal. The portion that runs underneath the cap is the section of the stripping that is used to affix the stripping to to the body.

The hollow rubber portion ( I think Rob was referring to this) comes up flush with the top of the chrome cap so what you will see looking down is the rubber/plastic filler cap flush alongside the pillar chrome cap.

I hope I provided you with a clearer explanation. If need be, I can easily take a photo this evening and send it your way.

Regards

Jeff
