Is the veneer on a 71 GTV strong enough to hold the radio on its own? When I purchased the car, it came with an uninstalled period Blaupunkt Essen. I think its from 1975, but close enough. There is a metal plate that's with it that looks like it will spread the weight of the radio along its entire face, instead of just relying on the posts. There is a threaded post at the end of radio, but it looks like I'd need to fabricate some kind of strap to utlize it.

No, the veneer, being only about 1mm thick, is not strong enough IMO to support the radio by itself for any length of time. The dash however is a vinyl covered metal framed affair that will support the radio. An additional support strap at the rear of the radio is recommended.

edit;
There are radio installation instructions on the CD. Look in the Information Sheets folder. Instructions start on page 163.
